Troubleshooting P0171 Code. Oftentimes, a P0171 means that your Toyota is having trouble with a dirty or faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor, or a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor (perhaps in the PCV line or in the valve itself). Of course, this code can also signify a bad O2 sensor in bank 1.
There are several things that can cause the lean code in your Toyota. If it has a plastic intake manifold there is a good chance that the intake manifold gaskets are leaking especially until the engine gets to operating temperature which makes them hard to detect. 2001 Toyota Corolla p0171
2000 Avalon. My Check Engine Light Came on while driving on the highway. The Toyota dealership said it was code P0171 -- Fuel Too Lean. The technician was a nice guy and he explained to me that the service manual lists a number of things but based on his experience he would narrow it down to A/F sensors.
The mysterious P0171 is very common over time with 8th gen Corolla If it's not the intake manifold gasket that's leaking, I still wonder about your intake manifold that is made of welded and pressed metal components instead of a one piece composite like in the 9th gen Corolla with same 1ZZ-FE engine
